Strandbeests

"Artist Theo Jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures he builds from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles. His creatures are designed to move -- and even survive -- on their own.

Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist who builds walking kinetic sculptures that he calls a new form of life. His "Strandbeests" walk the coastline of Holland, feeding on wind and fleeing from water."
These creatures are absolutely mindblowing, and the terminology Theo Jansen uses to describe his creations ("new forms of life," eventually I want to put these animals into herds...so they will live their own lives") brings into question what an animal is and blurs the lines between a 'kinetic sculpture' and an 'animal.' Theo Jansen really treats the Strandbeests like his children.

While I think that this is an amazing form of art, I don't think that this blurs the line over what an animal is. This man is creating machines out of pipes and bottles, not real life. It is cool, but clear.
