"The Course of Empire" by Thomas Cole was a magnificent illustration of the ongoing cycle of mankind vs. nature throughout history. Although human beings may progress to the pinnacle of success, nature will always be one step ahead. Nature has a way of replenishing itself whenever it deems necessary, and Cole's painting dramatically depicts this fact.
